It is administered through the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) two times a year to select hiring officers to officers of the Army, Navy and Air Force. The notification for the CDS examination is usually released during the months of March and August. The test will be held in February and August.  The CDS test is a way to assess candidates' General Knowledge, Mathematical Skills and English Proficiency.

Criteria for eligibility

1- UPSC is the exam that UPSC conducts for graduates who are not married, and has the following eligibility requirements Education qualifications

2- The eligibility criteria for Indian Military Academy (IMA) and Officer's Training Academy (OTA) is any Bachelor's degree from a recognized institution.

3- The minimum requirement for Naval Academy is either a B.Sc degree (with Physics and Mathematics) or Bachelor of Engineering degrees (B.Tech or B.E).

4- The minimum requirement for Air Force Academy is either an B.Sc degree (with Mathematics and/or Physics) or Bachelor degree of Engineering (B.Tech or B.E).

1- Indian Military Academy - 19-24 Years

2- Naval Academy - 19-22 Years

3- Air Force Academy - 19-23 Years

4- Officers' Training Academy - 19-25 Years

Note that only "unmarried" graduates (both males and females) can take part on this test.

Registration and Fees

1- Candidates can only apply through online registration.

2- Candidates can access their official site of UPSC i.e. www.upsconline.nic.in.

3- Then, he/she will be able to select "CDS Application Form 20xx".

4- They can then fill in all the necessary information in the form as well as uploading passport size photos and signature.

5- The candidate may pay the amount by credit card, debit card, or cash form.

The candidate must complete their order of preference in order to apply for Army, Navy, Air Force and OTA. Male candidates are allowed to choose the order of their preference, female candidates can only apply for OTA should make sure they choose OTA as their primary and sole preference.

Selection Procedure

There are three more options for selection after the written test: 

1. Personality Test/Personal Interview This test is performed through the Services Selection Board (SSB). In this test, a panel of officials evaluates all shortlisted candidates for their verbal and non communication skills. Apart from a one-on one interaction or group discussion, they may also organize an open discussion in a group or other type of group activity. The board of official simply perform a thorough analysis of the persona of the candidate as well as their knowledge, perspective and opinions on most current issues in the country.

2. Documental Verification The candidates who were selected during the SSB interview will be invited for verification of their documents. Here are the documents to be provided for verification:

1- Birth Certificate

2- Academic Degrees (HSC, SSC, Graduation etc)

3- Certificate of Eligibility to certain candidates

4- Size of passport photograph

5- Identity evidence

6- Residence proofs, etc.

3. Medical Examination of selected candidates. After being shortlisted during the first three rounds, each candidate is examined for medical issues through the Board of Service Medical Officers. This is the final step of the CDS selection process. The objective of this exam is to verify that the selected candidate is able to conform to the physical standards set by UPSC, e.g. candidates selected to join to join the Indian Air Force must have excellent eyesight.

Examination Pattern

The exam pattern for students who want to be within those in the Army, Navy or Air Force or the Officer's Training Academy, the examination pattern follows: General Knowledge The first exam is based about General Knowledge that comprises of 120 questions about History, Geography, National Politics, Current Affairs and General Science etc.

 Questions on current national/international events and matters of everyday life are generally asked in this section. A few general questions about History as well as Geography of India are also included in this test paper. English Second test paper in English.

The test tests the level of your English proficiency, particularly your grammar skills. There are a total of 120 questions that focus about general grammar vocabulary, comprehension of reading, vocabulary as well as synonyms, antonyms, and parajumbles. Elementary Mathematics This exam is only available to Army, Navy and Air Force aspirants (not for OTA).

 This paper tests the candidate's basic mathematical ability, intelligence-quotient (IQ) level and speed. There are 100 questions in all that are mainly focused on the 9th and 10th levels of mathematical concepts such as Algebra, Geometry, Number Systems as well as Interest, Probability, and more. Be aware that all three exam papers are of two hours and have 100 marks for each. Important Instructions

It is possible to receive a negative mark for incorrect answers. 1/3rd marks are deducted for each wrong answer meaning that for each right answer, the candidate gets around. 0.8 marks. For every incorrect response, 0.33 marks are deducted.

1- The above-mentioned tests are then followed by a break lasting 1 hour prior to the next test.

2- The 3 papers are objective in their nature (consisting of only multiple-choice kind of tests).

3- Commission is able to amend the cut-off marks in each segment.

4- Calculators are not allowed in the examination area.

Results

The CDS Examination Result is released in two parts:

1- Results of the written test including the names of the candidates selected for the personality test or the personal interview.

2- The second one shows the names of candidates who are able to take part in the personal interview stage.

3- Candidates who are qualified then need to go through the medical exam and the verification of documents following the official declaration of merit.
